Aufgabenbeschreibung
In the project breeding strategies will be developed for optimizing hybrid winter barley varieties adapted to be integrated in biogas crop rotations. Basis are mother and father winter barley lines from breeding programs of the involved companies. A published and well established CMS system (cytoplasmatic male sterility) will be transferred into the genetic backgrounds of suitable mothers. By the means of high efficient marker systems molecular markers will be developed which will enhance selection for CMS and restorer lines. Test cross hybrids will be generated by use of the gametocide CROISOR and will be phenotyped on six locations for characters which are important for an efficient biogas production with hybrid barley (total biomass yield, late sowing tolerance, winter hardiness, straw stability, resistance against important diseases). Traits which are relevant for stress tolerance and general vitality of plants (root growth, proline content, C13 discrimination) will be assessed. An association mapping approach will identify novel genetic markers correlated to the use of winter barley as renewable resource. Parental lines and test hybrids will be used by WZW, LfL and IPG-2 for examination of molecular mechanisms of heterosis in barley hybrids. Breeding companies will perform field trials at 6 locations. Using association genetic approaches stress tolerance conferring genes could be identified and verified for a heterosis expression in the corresponding hybrid progenies.
